Living in Geneva

Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Setting a realistic budget is essential to fully enjoy your stay. Here is a rough monthly estimate (in francs):

• Tuition fees: 100.
• Health and accident insurance: from 80.
  • Holder of a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC): free of charge.
• Transportation: 
  • Under 25 years old: 45.
    • According to eligibility: free of charge, the Unireso pass is covered by the State of Geneva.
  • 25 and over: 70.
• Rent: 700.
• Utilities/phone: 130.
• Food and daily needs: 600.
• Clothing, leisure, culture: 250.
• Estimated total: 1800 to 1900.

• EU citizens may work from the day they arrive (max. 15h/week).
• Non EU citizens may only work after 6 months of residence in Switzerland.

Finding accomodation in Geneva can be challenging — and practically impossible as the start of the school year approaches. Without securing housing before your arrival, you may not be able to find anything available.

UNIGE does not automatically provide housing for students. Start your search as early as possible to avoid difficulties upon arrival.

A residential address for the academic year is required to obtain your student residence permit.
