Fee waivers

In certain circumstances, it is possible to be exempt from the tutoring fees (CHF 435). The fixed administrative fees (CHF 65) must be paid in any case.

Automatic exemption (statutory exemption)

Students from the following categories only pay the fixed fees, as long as they are starting either a first basic or advanced education or a second basic education (see the Statut de l’Université, art. 77 [FR] and the Règlement interne relatif aux taxes universitaires et aux émoluments, art. 4 [FR]):

  • Assistants or teaching and research assistants, provided that they perform these duties for at least 3 months during the ongoing semester;
  • Scholarship students as part of exchanges with other universities, scholarship students from the Confédération, scholarship students who have a temporary research activity;
  • Students undertaking an internship* as part of their education program;
  • PhD students, first and last semesters of their education excepted. If the student is also an assistant, refer to point a);
  • Students enrolled at the University who are also signed up for and taking courses at the Institut œcuménique de Bossey;
  • Students in difficult financial situations who do not have a scholarship or a loan, as defined by the law on scholarships and loans (LBPE) (apply for a scolarship);
  • Students that are on leave of absence.

*In accordance with the Règlement interne relatif aux taxes universitaires et aux émoluments, article 4, let. c (FR): "An ‘internship’ is a leave outside of the University of Geneva, from one to two semesters (generally), during which the student does not use the UNIGE infrastructure."

Exemption for financial difficulties

Students facing financial difficulties, who do not have a scholarship or loan for their studies as defined by the law on scholarships and loans (LBPE) can apply for an exemption to the Financial Aid Service.

Information on US loans

The University of Geneva is no longer part of the US "Title IV Federal Aid program". Therefore, the University does not have a valid "FAFSA number". Thus, any American federal governmental aid is excluded.
