FAQ

How do I pay my semester fees?

There are three ways to pay your fees:

  • Payment by e-banking, from a Swiss or foreign bank account;
  • By credit card (or Twint);
  • In a post office in Switzerland: print the QR invoice available on your UNIGE portal.

All payment details are available on your UNIGE portal ("Mon UNIGE > Paiement des taxes semestrielles") and on the UNIGE mobile App.

You must pay all fees (transfer fees charged by your bank or the recipient's).

Why should I pay on time?

Once you have paid the full amount of the fees, you can update your student card for the semester, and download your proof of enrollment (on the UNIGE portal). You can also take your exams at the end of the semester and receive your diploma.

The attestation becomes available on your UNIGE portal ("Mon UNIGE > Attestations") about 10 days after you have paid the fees.

Check the payment amount, deadline and information:

If you do not pay the fees on time (we will send you a reminder), you will be automatically exmatriculated for payment default. If you are in this situation, see the page Re-enrollment after non-payment.

How can I find out if my payment has gone through? What should I do if it has not?

On the UNIGE portal ("Mon UNIGE > Paiement des taxes semestrielles"), you can see the status of your fees.

If you have not paid in full, you can see the amount still due and payment instructions. The status of your fees is also available on the UNIGE Mobile app.

Your proof of enrollment is available on your UNIGE portal once we have received your payment.

If you have paid your fees but still encounter a problem, submit proof of payment (a debit confirmation from your account, or the QR bill receipt) on the Admissions Office online platform.

How can I be sure that the email concerning the fees really comes from the UNIGE (and that it is not phishing)?

The email is sent from this address: noreply-immatriculation(at)unige.ch

Payment by QR bill is linked to the bank accounts of the University of Geneva. When you are entering your e-banking payment, "Université de Genève" must appear as the recipient. The general payment details and the QR bill are available from your UNIGE portal ("Mon UNIGE > Paiement des taxes semestrielles").

Is the amount of fees due correct?

Statutory exemption (e.g., leave of absence or internship) is automatic, the amount of your fees will be adjusted right away.

If you are in financial difficulty, you can ask the Financial Aid Service for a fee waiver (each year in September at the start of the academic year). If your request is accepted, the waiver is valid for both semester of the academic year. For waivers for the spring semester, contact the Financial Aid Service.

The exemption applies only to the CHF 435 tutoring fee. If you have applied for a waiver, you must still pay the fixed administrative fee (CHF 65) to avoid exmatriculation for payment default.

You have to pay CHF 65? That does not mean that you have been granted a fee waiver for the tutoring fee of CHF 435. The CHF 65 fee is established before waiver requests have been reviewed.

Important: If your exemption request is denied, your fees will be updatedon your UNIGE portal and you will receive a reminder by email for the missing CHF 435.

I am not taking classes this semester, and the only requirement left is finishing my thesis. Do I have to pay the fees in full?

Yes. You must pay the full fees of CHF 500 (except in the cases specified in article 77.2 of the University Statute).

No exemption apply because you do not meet aby of the conditions.

In your case, paying the full fees will grant you access to the exam session and allow you to receive your diploma.

I have applied for a scholarship from the SBPE (or another institution in my canton). Do I have to pay the full fees even if I have not yet received a reply?

Yes. You must pay the full fees (usually CHF 500) even if you have not yet received the reply from the SBPE (or other institution in your canton). Paying the full fees will grant you access to the exam session and allow you to receive your diploma.

  • If you receive a positive answer from the SBPE: there is nothing to do because you will have already paid the full fees (the amount of the scholarship includes the amount to pay the semester fees);
  • If you receive a negative answer from the SBPE: you can contact the Financial Aid Service to see if you qualify for a fee waiver.

Important: if you apply and receive a scholarship after you have been granted exemption from tuition fees, you must pay these fees. The amount of the cantonal scholarships includes the semester fees.

How can I pay from a foreign bank account?
  1. Go to the UNIGE portal ("Mon UNIGE > Paiement des taxes semestrielles > Payer par transert bancaire/E-Banking"),
  2. Use the banking details,
  3. Specify in your payment:
  • your name,
  • your student number (in the format XX-XXX-XXX), you can find it on your studend card.

You must pay all transfer fees (transfer fees charged by your bank or for the recipient's).

You can process a transfer using the banking details available on the UNIGE portal > Mon UNIGE> Paiement des taxes semestrielles > Payer par transfert bancaire/ E-Banking. Be sure to indicate in the "communication" field your name (i.e. the student’s name) and your student number (in the format XX-XXX-XXX). This is printed on your student ID card, and is also in the email concerning the fees.

You are responsible for all transfer fees, which are fees charged by your bank as well the recipient’s.

What if I want to definitively leave the University?

See the page to quit UNIGE.

I have been eliminated and have already received the email concerning the fees. What should I do?
  • If you do not appeal the elimination decision: you must not pay the fees for the next semester. You will be automatically exmatriculated when your elimination is confirmed, after the appeal deadline;
  • If you have appealed the elimination decision and get a suspensive effect (that authorizes you to continue your studies while the appeal is reviewed): pay the semester fees for the next semester on time. For any question about the suspensive effect, contact your faculty/institute/center.
  • If you have appealed the elimination decision and don't get a suspensive effect: do not pay the semester fees.
    • If your appeal is accepted and you resume your studies: you will then receive an e-mail to pay your fees for the semester you will be returning and your information will be updated on your UNIGE portal;
    • If your appeal is denied: you will be exmatriculated. Do not pay the fees.
