Figuring out my future career

Building a strong career plan requires a period of self-reflection. You need to figure out what inspires you, what you can do, and what you want to accomplish. This step is encouraged for those who want to find clarity before starting their internship or job hunt.

Objectives:

  • Use the Reflectory method to begin an introspective reflection.

Soft skills are now central to the job market. But what exactly are they? Which skills are employers frequently looking for, and which of these have you already had the opportunity to develop? Through practical exercices, you will identify your skills, learn how to promote them to employers, and you will gain confidence.

Objectives:

  • Understand what soft skills are and what their "value" is on the job market.
  • Recognize and list the skills acquired during your studies, extracurricular activities and professional experiences.
  • Promote your skills to an employer using the CAR/STAR method.
  • Identify ways to develop your skills "on y daily basis".

Objectives:

  • Begin an introspective reflection to better understand your individual preferences and motivational drive so you can make informed decisions.
  • Recognize and value your acquired skills to know how position yourself on the job market.

This workshop includes a 2:45 hour group session and entitles you to a 1:30 hour individual appointment (to be scheduled) to discuss your test results. In addition to this workshop, attending the Explore the job market workshop is strongly encouraged.


Discovering the job market

Understanding how the job market works is key to directing your career path in the right direction. To do so, you need to browse the different fields and positions offered, and examine the profiles and skills recruiters are looking for. This process allows you to widen your horizons and adapt your ambitions to realistic opportunities.


Student job, internship, first job: learn all about the permits and procedures in the canton of Geneva

Are you a foreign student in Geneva? Would you like to work during your studies, do an intership, or are you thinking about your first job after you graduate? This information session will help you better understand the legal and administrative framework for work permits. Representatives from the OCPM (Cantonal Office for Population and Migration) and the OCIRT (Cantonal Office for Labor Inspection and Relations) will present the current rules and procedures to follow. A question-and-answer session will take place after the presentation.

This workshop will allow you to:

The Vocations podcast, co-produced by the Office for Guidance, Vocational Training and Continuing Education (OFPC), lets you meet graduates from the University of Geneva. Through in-depth discussions, it explores their career paths, their doubts, their motivations, and how each of them is forging their own path in a changing professional world.

The Career mentorship program gives you the opportunity to receive, during seven months, support from a UNIGE graduate employed in your field of interest! Your mentor will share their experience of transitioning from school to their first job, introduce you to the field you wish to work in and its needs, and help you start your network.

Opportunities to meet employers directly to learn more about their expectations, expand your professional network, and discover concrete opportunities.

For most UNIGE alumni, networking was the key strategy to find their first job. This workshop will help you understand what networking is, what it can do for you, and how to go about it. You will then practice networking interviews in a supportive, low-pressure environment with career development and human resources specialists.


Efficient application

When your career plan becomes clear is when you need to act. Some tools are essential for an efficient application: resume, cover letter, interviews, online presence, etc. This step applies to anyone ready to enter the job market or to land an internship and willing to maximize their chances.


Do you feel that your resume is ready to be sent? Put it to the test with a recruitment professional. For 30 minutes, you will receive expert advice on how to optimize it and prepare yourself for the job market. What you gain from this workshop:

  • Constructive criticisme on the content and format of your resume,
  • Concrete ideas to make it more impactful,
  • A better understanding of employers' expectations.

The Career Centre supports you throughout your studies, to think about your professional future, to highlight your profile, and to get ready for the transition to employment.

During this workshop, you will discover how AI tools, such as ChatGPT, can be valuable allies to optimize your job search. We will explore key areas where AI can add value, as well as its limitations. This interactive workshop will include practical demonstrations, concrete examples, and tips to make the most of AI tools in a strategix and informed way.

  • Explore the various uses of AI in job hunting.
  • Learn how to interact effectively with AI through personalized and targeted prompts.
  • Understand the limitations of AI in this field.
  • Understand the impact of AI on the job market.

To secure an interview, an effective and targeted resume and cover letter are crucial. Find out what sections to include, how to write them, what pitfalls to avoid, and what formatting issues to consider.

Including a good photo in your resume helps convey a positive and professional image to employers. It can also positively influence their opinion of you. LinkedIn profiles with a picture are viewed much more often than those without one. The Career Centre offers the opportunity to have a high quality photo taken for your resume and LinkedIn profile.

The job interview is a mandatory and often tricky step in securing a position. Succeeding requires excellent preparation, mastery of this critical moment, and a lot of practice.

This workshop will help you with:

  • Identifying the key elements of effective preparation for job interviews.
  • Learning about possible interview questions and how to answer them effectively.
  • Mastering skill-oriented interviews, a technique widely used by recruiters.
  • Being able to create a positive dynamic during a job interview and making a good first impression.

In addition to this workshop, you are strongly encouraged to practice through a personalized interview simulation with one of our advisors. This practice will help you improve through transparent, targeted, and constructive feedback.

LinkedIn has established itself as an essential tool for any job search. But how can you best manage your LinkedIn profile? How can you attract the attention of your peers and potential recruiters? And how can you network through the various channels available to you?


Boost your soft skills

Soft skills are abilities that enable you to learn, interact harmoniously with others, and adapt to different life situations. Used daily, hey are revealed through actions, they are transferable, and they are acquired through experience. They are central to professional integration and career success. Our program is organized in 9 modules and focuses on the skills most often sought by employers. With a practical approach, this training provides simple and concrete tools for reflecting on, developing, and enhancing your soft skills. Students who have actively participated in at least 6 of the 9 modules, including the introduction module, are eligible to receive a certificate.

This module will raise your awareness of the various issues that come with starting a new job (expectations, codes of conduct, corporate culture, etc.) to help you better prepare for your integration.

  • Observe and recognize a company's corporate culture and values and adapt consequently.
  • Understand the specifics of the trial period and how to "get through" this crucial stage.
  • Avoid the most common mistakes and apply the best practices to project a positive image of yourself.

Whether you need to define your professional goals, activities and projects, or you have to take part in discussions aimed at getting what is important to you or your company... In the professional world, you will very often stumble upon needs and opportunities to negotiate! Thanks to this interactive and practical module, discover how to implement a varietey of strategies and approaches that will help you improve your negotiation skills. Working on real-life cases, you will practice the art of negotiation and learn how to argue more effectively.

Objectives:

  • Discover and learn negotiating principles and techniques and train your negotiation skills.
  • Learn how to get ready for negotiation and prepare your arguments following a structured approach.
  • Create value during your negotiations.
  • Handle objections, analyze difficult situations and deal with both.

Good communication is a skill that employers consistently demand! Understanding the challenges of interpersonal communication and learning some practical techniques for a "better communication" is a major asset in your life, both professional and pesronal.

Objectives:

  • Understand the challenges of interpersonal communication.
  • Recognize the "noise" concept in communication.
  • Equipe yourself with the right tools for constructive communication.
  • Practice nonviolent communication and active listening techniques.

Nowadays, employers have to face extremely complex issues. To deal with them, it is more necessary than ever to be equipped with different skills, different problem-solving approaches and different perspectives. In this module, we will reflect on how to organize teamwork and about the different roles needed to improve the overall performance of a team. Each participant will get to reflect on their own way of interacting with others in a team setting and to identifiy their assets and their values within a team.

Objectives:

  • See the challenges of teamwork.
  • Understand the different roles in a team (Belbin method).
  • Analyze conflict dynamics and examine a situation with hindsight.
  • Reflect on your own way of interacting with others and establish an action plan to optimize your interactions within a team.

Managing your many professional and personal obligations as efficiently as possible, dealing with the unexpected, juggling priorities, fighting procrastination... Effective time management requires understanding and evaluating your own organization and "mistakes" and knowing management methods. In this module, we will explore concrete ways to optimize your organization.

Objectives:

  • Identify the main obstacles to good time management, such as procrastination, "mistakes" related planning, or having to deal with the unexpected.
  • Discover and experiment with management and planning tools to overcome these obstacles.
  • Choose your own method to improve your personal efficiency and organization.

Do you have to give an oral presentation and it is stressing you out? Then this training course is for you! Understanding the challenges of oral communication and learning some practical techniques, including the tools and material to use, will help you feel more comfortable. In your professional (and personal!) life, you will often find yourself speaking in public in front of an audience or a group. Doing so effectively, clearly and concisely is a valued and renowned asset.

Objectives:

  • Identify the necessary elements for effective public speaking.
  • Know how to catch and hold your audience's attention by considering the verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication.
  • Recognize the elements that help processing a message.
  • Review the elements that allow you to create user-friendly communication supports best suited to your presentation.

Conflicts in the workplace can arise for many reasons – conflict of ideas, of methods, of priorities, of power, resistance to change, hierarchical pressure, lack of recognition, etc. – and can have harmful consequences for everyone involved. In this practical workshop, each participant will get to reflect on their own way of interacting with others in conflict situations, identify their reactions, emotions and conflict behavior, and develop strategies to defuse conflict.

Objectives:

  • Recognize different types of conflict.
  • Identify conflictual reactions and learn to stay ahead of them.
  • Develop conflict resolution strategies.

Emotions are central to our lives: they influence our decisions, our motivation, and our relationships. Emotional intelligence covers our ability to recognize, understand, regulate and manage both others' and our emotions. In the professional context, these skills are particularly important when it comes to working together on projects, managing conflicts, motivating others, or creating harmony within work teams. In this module, each participant will get to reflect on their emotional skills and develop strategies to better understand them.

Objectives:

  • Understand the 4 key skills of emotional intelligence.
  • Recognize the role and importance of emotional skills in the workplace.
  • Assess how emotions affect our reasoning and decision-making.
  • Identify strategic approaches to develop each of these skills.
