Working in Switzerland after a PhD or postdoc at UNIGE

Description

A workshop on the situation of non-EU/EFTA nationals after obtaining a PhD or a postdoc aims to provide detailed information about :

  • The status of PhD students and postdocs ;
  • The conditions to be met to obtain a permit to work (subject to quotas) ;
  • Questions concerning the right to unemployment benefit ("aptitude au placement");
  • Legitimation cards.


Objective

Participants will better understand their immigration status in Switzerland (student or worker?). This will enable them to plan their next career steps.

They will get to know the legal framework of migration at the federal level and the specific practice of the Canton of Geneva. The requirements for obtaining a work permit will be explained in detail.

Your work contract and permit are about to expire? You will learn more about the conditions which need to be fulfilled to receive Unemployment Benefit.

If you are interested in working for the UN or a recognised NGO, you will learn about your rights if you hold a legitimation card.


Format

The workshop will take place in person at CMU from 5:15 to 7:15 pm.

The workshop lasts 1 hour and is divided into 5 sections:

  • Introduction to Swiss immigration law (I),
  • Study permits (II),
  • Conditions for obtaining a work permit (III),
  • Entitlement to unemployment benefits (IV) and
  • Specificities regarding legitimation cards (V).


A question and answer session will take up the second hour of the workshop. You will have the opportunity to have your doubts clarified and to have an exchange of views with the speaker.

The workshop will be followed by an aperitif.

The workshop is open to PhD students and postdocs from UNIGE.

The workshop is free but registration is mandatory.

Speaker

Fiorella Fernandez Deshogues is a legal advisor. She specializes in migration, employment, and social security law. She graduated from the University of Lausanne (Master of Law) and has more than 10 years of professional experience.

Thanks to her extensive experience in the immigration department of a large fiduciary company, in a specialized law firm, and in several associations for the defense of the rights of foreigners in different cantons, she has acquired specialized knowledge in various aspects of immigration law. She founded Swiss Immigration in 2020 to advise:


Fiorella is passionate about her work. She has a migration background (from Peru to France and Switzerland) and is sensitive to social issues.
