Monthly grant

Publics:  unige hesge

The monthly allowance is regular financial assistance if you have limited resources. You can apply for it if you meet certain conditions.

Important:

  • If you receive a cantonal grant or are receiving social assistance, you are not eligible for our monthly grant.
  • If you meet the criteria to apply for a cantonal grant, you must do so before or while you are applying to our service. This will allow us to process your application more quickly.
Who can apply for a monthly grant?

To apply for the grant, you must:

  • be enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program at UNIGE or HES-SO Geneva,
  • have had an annual gross income of less than CHF 20,000,
  • have assets of less than CHF 20,000,
  • if you are under 25 and/or financially dependent on your parents/guarantor:
    • you can apply if their income is below the scales.
  • not be eligible for a cantonal grant or have been refused one. See the State of Geneva website to apply for a cantonal grant.

  2. Attach the required documents,
  3. Submit your application.

Documents to provide for a monthly grant application

To apply, you must provide certain documents:

  • a letter explaining your financial situation and why you are applying,
  • a copy of your identity document or residence permit,
  • the IBAN number of your personal bank account (if you are in the process of opening an account, please let us know),
  • a financial support statement from your parents or a guarantor,
  • your latest tax notice (impôts):
    • if you are under 25 or financially dependent on your parents/guarantors: their tax notice,
  • income not shown on the tax assessment notice (e.g., donations, grants from other organizations, undeclared wages),
  • if you meet the conditions for applying for a cantonal grant: proof that you have submitted your application or the decision of the Office des bourses cantonales (Cantonal Grants Office).

You can consult the list of documents to be provided for a monthly grant in the financial aid guidelines (page 8).

What should you do if your financial situation changes?

Important:

  • We may ask you for additional documents to assess your situation.
  • Applying does not guarantee that you will receive a grant. See the conditions for awarding grants in Chapter 1 of the financial aid guidelines.
  • If we award you a grant, it will be paid in 10 installments. If the decision is made after September, the previous months will also be covered (for example: if the payment is made in October, you will receive the money for October and September).
  • If you receive a cantonal grant after receiving the monthly grant, you will have to repay the assistance paid to you.
  • When you submit your application, you agree that UNIGE will exchange information with the Service des bourses et prêts d’études du canton de Genève (Geneva Canton Scholarship and Student Loan Service) and with the Hospice général.
