Mastering the learning platforms and tools
In this section, you will find the tools and resources necessary for distance learning at the UNIGE.
This page lists the descriptions, tutorials, FAQs and technical support contact information available for the various platforms used.
The Moodle teaching platform
Moodle is an online teaching platform (LMS or Learning Management System) that allows the creation, management and monitoring of courses. Its goal is to provide support for online teaching and learning.
Moodle is the only teaching platform proposed and supported by the UNIGE. It was chosen for its flexibility, the great diversity and customization of its tools, and for its compatibility with a socio-constructivist pedagogy. According to this approach, the construction of knowledge is based on experimentation and discovery in a social and cultural environment. This platform will allow you to do exercises and quizzes, access resources, interact and work in groups, etc.
On Moodle, you will find courses offered by all the faculties, as well as courses offered by the central services. In particular, you will find a section dedicated to help you succeed in your studies.

Storage and collaboration platform: ONEDRIVE and SWITCHDRIVE
To store a course recording or a video clip, the teacher may choose to use the Moodle platform. However, if the size of the video is large and exceeds the capabilities of Moodle, he or she may choose to store them on Mediaserver, Onedrive (the institutional equivalent of GoogleDrive) or SWTICHdrive.
Onedrive
Since the beginning of 2020, all members of the UNIGE have access to the OneDrive cloud storage solution. This personal space of 1 terabyte (TB) synchronizes with a local copy of the files on the workstation, whether institutional or private, thus facilitating the use and sharing with others.
You can use this space to create and store your documents and course notes, your essays (reports, projects, dissertations) and carry out in synchronous or asynchronous mode your group work by connecting simultaneously or not on the same document to modify it.

Switchdrive
The SWITCH foundation offers the Swiss university community an alternative to commercial personal cloud services such as OneDrive, Dropbox, GoogleDrive, etc. Thanks to this initiative, the UNIGE offers a secure web storage service that provides the entire university community with free storage and sharing of documents in the Cloud.
This service is available and compatible with numerous devices (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.) and operating systems. To access this service, you need to go to SWITCHdrive and request the creation of a SWITCHcloud ID using your AAI ID (ISIS login).

MEDIASERVER multimedia platform
Mediaserver is the multimedia platform of the UNIGE. You will find the recording of courses, their live streaming and the storage of audio and video files.

ZOOM video-conferencing platform
Zoom
The Zoom videoconferencing system allows you to give or follow a live course online, to lead webinars and to organize collaborative activities. The Zoom UNIGE platform is accessible at https://unige.zoom.us/, using an ISIS login. When you first connect, click on "Sign-In" to setup your account (see the tutorials below).
Zoom's privacy policy is available here. See also the tutorial detailing Zoom's security and privacy best practices. See also the recent communication from SWITCH on this subject.
As a student, you can use Zoom to create a workroom for your group work, for example, or to study together.

Security Note:
The UNIGE has extended the Zoom license, initially acquired for one semester, to the entire 2020/2021 academic year. Several substantive changes have been made to this platform, or are in the process of being made, to enable its use: end-to-end encryption, modification of default settings favoring choices, thus offering the best protection such as password management, waiting rooms or screen sharing.
Using the Zoom service involves the collection and processing of personal data by Zoom. Therefore, the institution encourages everyone to follow good security and privacy practices on how to set up Zoom accounts.
