evaluation OF basic education courses

The evaluation of teaching is a tool for developing the quality of teaching at the University of Geneva.

It allows us to:

  • identify the strengths and weaknesses of courses
  • measure the impact of pedagogical innovations
  • to highlight and valorize quality teaching or to detect and rectify regrettable teaching situations
  • guide the support to be provided to faculty members to foster the development of their teaching skills
  • to guide the internal management and steering of the UPER and UER in terms of teaching.

All courses taught at the University of Geneva are periodically evaluated. This institutional evaluation is organized by the UPER, which appoints a person or body responsible for the evaluation.

In addition to the institutional evaluation, teachers have the possibility of requesting a personalized evaluation of their teaching.

Principles

The directive on the evaluation of teaching (FR), adopted by the Board of Education on May 26, 2014, specifies recommendations and minimum bases common to all UPERs in terms of the evaluation of teaching activities at the University of Geneva. It is part of the institution's quality policy, which deploys the quality approach in two main areas: prevention and improvement. The evaluation of teaching and programs is an integral part of this second axis.

Each UPER can adapt or complete the evaluation procedures and tools according to its specificities and needs, as long as they meet the basic recommendations.

We inform you that we are not able to process questionnaires and/or data that do not come from our ADEVEN service.

Responsibilities and frequency

The dean's office or the directorate defines the rules in force concerning the planning and frequency of evaluations. Evaluations must take place at least every three years for Bachelor's courses and every two years for Master's courses. This frequency may be shortened.

An evaluation schedule for each program can be established over several years, as can the choice to systematically evaluate all courses each year, if justified.

Evaluation method

In general, evaluations are done online at the end of each semester.

In order to minimize errors in the process, the teachers concerned receive an e-mail before the questionnaires are sent to the students with the following details (number of students, other teachers involved, dates of dispatch and closing of the student survey). If there is no response from them, the surveys will be sent with the information contained in the message.

Deadlines

  • Request for survey and customization of questionnaires: from 07 to 25.11.2022
  • Start of the evaluations: from 28.11.2022
  • Closing of the evaluations and dispatch of reports: from 18.12.2022

Administration of evaluations

In order to maximize the response rate, we recommend that teachers give students about ten minutes at the beginning of a lesson to fill out the evaluation questionnaires (via computer, smartphone or tablet).

Students receive a link to each of the evaluation questionnaires directly by e-mail. This link contains a password that guarantees the singleness of the students' answers and their anonymity.

From now on, the evaluation questionnaires for the courses are also accessible from the Moodle platform, even when these courses are not registered on this teaching platform.

When students submit the completed questionnaire, the link is automatically deleted and cannot be reused. In addition, it is impossible to trace the author of the responses once the link has been deleted.

An automatic reminder is sent to students who have not completed one or more surveys a few days after the start of the evaluation session.

Note: if necessary, it is possible to bring forward the start date of the evaluations. To do so, please contact Adeven.

  • new courses
  • courses whose teachers are in the process of changing
  • courses for which the teacher has applied using this form (FR).

Furthermore, from the beginning of the 2021 academic year, the courses will be evaluated in accordance with the frequency recommended by the institutional directive (FR) on course evaluations, i.e. every three years for Bachelor's courses and every two years for Master's courses. The courses of the program(s) concerned will be evaluated by the usual questionnaire.

We remind you that seminars and colloquia are not evaluated.

Tools and resources

Questionnaires

The institutional evaluation is done through four unified questionnaires for all faculties:

The questionnaires consist of a block of questions evaluating the different dimensions of teaching, and a separate block of questions for the teacher. In the case where several teachers are involved, this block can be multiplied. A block for the assistant can be integrated as well.
The person responsible for a course can ask for the general questions block to be personalized by adding up to 5 items by ADEVEN (by replying directly to the survey planning verification e-mail. For deadlines, see in the Principles tab). However, existing items cannot be modified or deleted.

The evaluation questionnaires are in French and English. The student has the possibility to change the language of the questionnaire by clicking on the language icon. If there are less than 5 respondents, no report will be sent to the teacher.

Evaluation reports

An evaluation report, specific to each teacher, is sent by e-mail at the end of the evaluations. To help you interpret the results, you may consult the Data Interpretation Guide or ask a pedagogical advisor. In accordance with the guidelines, and for reasons of representativeness and data reliability, responses to closed-ended questions are not provided if the number of respondents is below 5. At the end of the academic year, each dean and/or chairperson receives access to the EvaSys platform, allowing him/her to obtain all the evaluation reports for the past year (see institutional guidelines).

Valorizing the results

Valorizing the results of an evaluation consists in using the information contained in it for development, communication or promotion purposes. This can take several forms for which we can assist you:

  • Requesting an interview with an pedagogical advisor to further analyze and interpret the results
  • Keeping a file with your evaluation results with comments and a follow-up of the modifications done to the teaching
  • Prepare a teaching portfolio that reflects your evaluation practices
  • Share with your colleagues what you are doing around evaluation and to develop your teaching.
Learning to progress

Evaluating a teaching allows one to highlight one's strengths and weaknesses as a teacher, and to open up new perspectives towards practices that one does not always master or wishes to discover. Additionally, the evaluation is an opportunity to identify areas of development in practices. In order to fill these gaps, we offer various methods at your disposal:

  • Request an observation of your teaching by a pedagogical advisor from the SEA department
  • Request an individual interview with a pedagogical advisor
  • If you are an assistant or a new teacher, sign up for the intensive training week in university pedagogy (Workshop)
  • Participate in a CFE Network training workshop
  • Or a pedagogical lunch to discover a specific topic.

Evaluation of continuing education courses

The evaluation of teaching is a mechanism that contributes to the development of the quality of teaching at the University of Geneva, in particular by making it possible to:

  • to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the courses
  • highlighting quality teaching and enhancing it or detecting problematic teaching situations and correcting them
  • to measure the impact of pedagogical innovations on students and communicate them
  • to determine the support to be provided to faculty members to foster the development of their teaching skills
  • to guide the management and internal steering of the UPERs and UERs in terms of teaching (organization of courses and programs, orientations according to the teaching capacity of each, choice of teaching and/or evaluation methods, etc.).

(Extract from the Directive on the Evaluation of Teaching at the University of Geneva)

Tools

The evaluation is carried out by means of online questionnaires sent to the participants of a continuing education course in order to collect their appreciation of various aspects of the course. Participants receive a link to the evaluation questionnaire directly by e-mail. This link contains a password that guarantees the singleness of the participants' answers and their anonymity.

We offer a questionnaire for diploma and qualification courses. This questionnaire consists of a standard part, common to all continuing education programs, and a customizable part with a list of questions to choose from. The questionnaire is available in French and English.

The questionnaire used for the evaluations is:

We inform you that we are not able to process questionnaires and/or data that are not issued from our ADEVEN service.

Make a request

If you wish to carry out an evaluation of your training, you can send your request to ADEVEN by filling in the evaluation request form with all the information requested. You can complete the questionnaire with additional personalized questions taken from the list of questions. These selected questions should be indicated in the evaluation request form by checking the corresponding box in the "Include" column.

Application form for evaluation of continuing education modules / courses - download

The request for evaluation must be sent to: adeven(at)unige.ch at the latest two weeks before the desired evaluation date.

If the number of respondents is less than five, the report cannot be produced. In order to ensure a good response rate, we recommend that you conduct the evaluations in class (usually during the last session).

For your information, an annual report containing the number of surveys completed and the average evaluation for continuing education courses (modules, sessions, etc.) is sent to the CFCD.

If you would like to collect participants' opinions on your training program as a whole, we recommend that you visit our page on the program survey.

Our services

We are happy to accompany you throughout the evaluation process in order to enhance and improve your training.

We support you throughout this process to:

  • set up and conduct evaluations
  • interpret the reports by taking into account all the dimensions of teaching
  • advise you on how to make adjustments.

Custom Evaluation

A personalized approach to evaluation allows you to explore your teaching practices in depth through ad hoc measures and sources of information. It is a preferential tool for evaluating pedagogical innovations and their impact on your students. Used as a complement to the institutional evaluation process, it can shed light on ambiguous or unsatisfactory results.

To do so, we provide you with several tools that can be combined:

  • Observation of a course with feedback by one of our pedagogical advisors
  • Designing a customized questionnaire with your collaboration OR using a standard questionnaire available from ADEVEN. Personalized and discretionary administration and processing
  • Analysis interview based on your needs, on your materials, your testimonies and other documents at your disposal
  • Self-evaluation or peer evaluation.

These different forms of custom evaluation are designed to identify your teaching needs as closely as possible; they thus allow to take more targeted actions in relation to the needs identified.

Regardless of the option chosen, personalized support is provided throughout the process by one of the pedagogical advisors of the SEA department.
