You can change faculty or enroll in a second faculty/institute/center for a PhD.
When should I apply for a change or second enrollment for a PhD?
You can apply for a change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty/institute/center at any point during the year.
Exception: if you wish to start a PhD at the Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM), you must apply before February 28 (for most programs).

Required level of French
No particular level of French is required for a PhD. See the study regulations for the chose program to check the required language levels.
Procedure
Follow the procedure for your chosen faculty/institute:
Faculty of Science
- Find a professor willing to direct your thesis and ask them for a certificate that attests it;
- For the PhD in Life Sciences, contact the program coordinator. At the same time, find a thesis advisor; their faculty will be the one you enroll in. You will then receive a PhD advisement certificate mentioning the exact starting date (semester) of your thesis and any given equivalence;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a 2nd faculty on the Admissions Office online platform;
Exception: if you wish to apply for the MAS in hospital pharmacy, check MAS pharmacie hospitalière - Pharmacie à Genève aux HUG - HUG (FR).
Faculty of Medicine
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.
Faculty of Humanities
- Find a professor willing to direct your thesis;
- If you are accepted, they will apply for your thesis registration;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform, attaching the admission letter.
Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM)
- See the web page with GSEM's PhDs;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.
Geneva School of Social Sciences (SdS)
- Find a professor willing to direct your thesis and ask them for a certificate that attests it;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.
Faculty of Law
- If you wish to be admitted to the PhD of Laws program, you must meet the admission requirements set out in the Faculty's Rules of Studies. You must have already obtained the agreement of a professor on the basis of a thesis proposal. When you apply, you will need to send a letter of agreement signed by a professor of the Faculty, together with your thesis proposal.
- If you are not already in contact with a professor, you can contact one whose area of expertise you feel is relevant to your subject, to ask if they can supervise your thesis. If so, you can apply. Professors are free to accept or reject new thesis directorships.

Then:
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.
Faculty of Theology
- Find a professor from the Faculty of Theology (FR) who might be interested in your research subject and being your thesis advisor;
- Contact them and provide them with a preliminary thesis project (one to three pages), your resume and a cover letter;
- If your research project interests them, ask them for a written certificate attesting that they will direct your thesis;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.

Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPSE)
- Find a professor willing to direct your thesis and ask for the PhD form, which they must sign;
- Request your change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty on the Admissions Office online platform.

Global Studies Institute
1. Find two lecturers (1 at GSI and 1 in one of our partner faculties, i.e. Medicine, Law, Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics & Management or Science) who are likely to be interested in your field of research and willing to be your thesis co-directors;
2. Contact them with a preliminary thesis proposal (one to three pages), resume and cover letter;
3. If they are interested in your research project, ask them for written confirmation that they have agreed to supervise your thesis;
4. Request your re-enrollment on the Admissions Office online platform.

Master of advanced studies (MAS) and certificate of specialization (CS)
You can request a change of faculty or enrollment in a second faculty/institute/center to start a MAS or a CS.
Apply on the Admissions Office online platform.
When should I request a change or second enrollment for a MAS or CS?
- For the Fall semester: between January 15 and July 31;
- For the Spring semester: between September 15 and July 30.
No change or second enrollment application can be submitted after the deadline.

Required level of French
- For Master of Advanced Studies programs: no particular level of French required. However, the study regulations can set specific required language levels.
- For Certificate of Specialization programs: the faculty/institute/center may require the French exam, depending on the program.
Special deadlines and possible further steps (within faculty or other indicated body)
The following faculties have specific deadlines.
If you do not meet these deadlines or if your application is rejected, we will not process the change or second enrollment application.
